A Welsh health worker had her hood and headlights stolen while she was parked outside the hospital where she worked.

Helen Dawes cares for the children of key workers at Wales University Hospital in Cardiff, but during her shift on Wednesday, a security guard told her, “I’m sorry to tell you this, but you don’t have the hood on your car.”

The 44-year-old woman had parked her white Ford Fiesta in the hospital parking lot.

Speaking to Wales Online, she said: “I couldn’t assimilate it. I was surprised.”

Dawes said he could not understand how this could happen during the coronavirus pandemic, when key workers are under so much pressure.

She added: “You go into work in this crisis and you get a phone call like that.

“You just think, ‘Why would someone want to do something like that?’

“They would know that I work or that I am visiting someone in the hospital.

“I cannot drive the car because it is not safe. My husband is working from home, so he will have to take me to work.”

Ms. Dawes reported the incident to the police and was allowed to drive the vehicle home as long as she did not use a highway.

In a statement, the South Wales police said: “Police in Cardiff are investigating the theft of a hood that was taken from a white Ford Fiesta that was parked inside the University Hospital of Wales.

What is the NHS Heroes campaign?

The NHS is the best of us. We watch in awe as they work tirelessly to take care of us during these unprecedented times. We have never trusted them more. We’ve never had to thank you more, and that’s what our Help for Heroes initiative is all about.

You can show how much you appreciate their efforts by sending them a little love, on our Thanks To Millions Map https://www.thanksamillionnhs.co.uk/ Just add your message of support and send a heart to your zip code area. You can zoom in to see how many people from communities in Britain support it and read other messages. If you are a member of the NHS staff, you will find a dedicated section of discounts and discount offers, just for you too.

But along with appreciation, the NHS also needs our help – from PPE to food to keeping them running on shifts, medical supplies, and more – money can make a big difference. So we’ve launched NHS Heroes Help From Home, a nationwide fundraising campaign for our frontline NHS that everyone can participate in.
