Merseyside homes woke up to “loud airplane noise” that could be heard from miles away.

People from all over Liverpool and Wirral areas took to social media around 10.30pm Thursday night after being shocked by the noise.

Many were puzzled by what had created the sound, but others were quick to assure them that it was a plane that could be heard.

On Twitter, user @rudkin_abigail said: “It sounded like a really, really low plane passing over the house.

“So strong.”

Another user @KittySnac also said, “Has anyone at Bootle heard this noise? Is it the springs again?”

But one follower was quick to reply, “Yeah, I heard it, I thought it was a very low flying plane or something.”

Other people tweeted to claim that the aircraft that had been heard was an RAF Typhoon, while the flight-tracking service Flight Radar recorded a fighter plane with the same description that began a circuit over the city shortly after 9 p.m.

Stephen Sutton said: “The RAF typhoon just passed over North Liverpool then.”

Fortunately for heavy sleepers, Liverpool John Lennon Airport observers tweeted to reassure people and also confirmed that this would not be the last time the plane would be heard over the city.

They said: “You can all know that there were two fighter jets flying over Liverpool about 20 minutes ago.

“These were two Eurofighter Typhoons from RAF Coningsby as the base will be in night flight for the next two weeks.

“These were TYPHOO19 (ZK321) and TYPHO326 (ZJ946).”
