Businessman John Hays died at age 71, on Friday, November 13, after collapsing at work.

The highly respected and loved businessman who co-owned the travel company with his wife Irene and made Hays Travel the UK’s largest independent travel agency.

A declaration of Hays Travel He said: “It is with the deepest sadness and regret that we have to announce that John Hays, the founder and Managing Director of Hays Travel died today while doing the job he loved.

“John, who with his wife and co-owner Irene Hays bought the property from Thomas Cook a year ago, was working at the company’s Sunderland headquarters when it collapsed.

“John made Hays Travel the UK’s largest independent travel agency providing jobs and careers for thousands of young people over 40.

“Throughout this difficult past year, he did everything he could to save jobs and protect the travel industry.

“His staff, colleagues, family and friends respected him immensely and he was recognized throughout his life for his many accomplishments.

“He was equally proud of his loyal staff who, under the direction of the board and senior management team, will ensure that the business continues to serve the clients of the UK’s largest independent travel agent as he would have wanted.”
