Frank Lampard will lose his ‘best defender’ if Chelsea manager lets Antonio Rudiger leave the club in this transfer window, warns Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

The center-back was absent from the Blues squad for the third game in a row when Lampard’s team pulled out of the Carabao Cup on penalties against the Spurs on Tuesday night.

The 27-year-old has fallen into the hierarchy of Stamford Bridge and, following the arrival of Thiago Silva, Rudiger has become the club’s fifth center-back.

Various Premier League clubs, including West Ham and Tottenham, are rumored to be interested in signing the central defender.

Meanwhile, reports in France claim that Rudiger has held talks with Paris Saint-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel about a possible move to the French champions.

Chelsea’s defensive woes from last season have continued this season, with the Blues conceding six goals in their first three Premier League games.

Former Chelsea striker Hasselbaink believes Rudiger is his best option at center-back and insists something must be happening behind the scenes so he doesn’t play.

“Everyone has made mistakes, but for me their best center-back is Rudiger,” Hasselbaink told Sky Sports.

“At the end of last season he didn’t have his best streak, he was out of the team but if you look at a full season he did better.

‘It usually smells danger and clears it up. So that Rudiger hasn’t played yet something is happening. ‘

Lampard remained tight-lipped about the defender’s future after the Spurs loss.

When asked if Rudiger’s future is far from Stamford Bridge, the English boss replied: “No, it is not at that time.”
