Half-Life: Alyx’s unique melon is hidden out of sight

It’s hard to imagine worse things to eat while you’re in virtual reality. Do you really want sticky fingers gripping your index drivers, melon juice splashing onto your expensive electronics? It’s probably for the best, then, that the watermelon in Half-Life: Alyx is impossible to find in the normal game – a sweet and tempting snack hidden only for those brave enough to crack tricks.

As Half-Life YouTuber MarphitimusBlackimus (via Kotaku) demonstrated, Alyx’s only watermelon can be found from the start, near the basement from which Alyx observes the various ankles of City 17. However, it is impossible to see her regularly . Only by activating traps and enabling the noclip can you see the tasty fruit, flying out the window to rummage through a stranger’s shopping bag.

But when compared to the fruit of Half-Life’s past, Alyx melon disappoints. While it flaunts a higher resolution texture, it doesn’t create satisfying melons, it just vanishes in a cloud of smoke when fired. However, the most criminal thing of all is that secret. As rare as they were, watermelons were apparently a recurring secret in Half-Life 2 and HL2: Deathmatch. Huh

If you wanted to, you could probably run a melon-focused speedrun from Half-Life 2, making sure to do your best for a sweet, fruity snack. Actually, looking at the game’s extended categories on speedrun.com, it looks like it hasn’t even been attempted.

That will be me setting some world records after work.

I’m surprised you didn’t know this was a thing. I have invested hundreds, if not thousands, of hours in the Half-Life 2 map files. Can you even call a handful of accessories a trend? Is this just a weird obsession from an HL2 fan? Most important of all, though, is where the hungry and oppressed citizens of City 17 are finding all of this fruit, and why have they become so popular in the time between Half-Life: the arrival of Alyx and Gordon Freeman five. years later?

Sadly, there are no melons in the Half-Life 2 episodes, nor in the brief tech demo HL2: Lost Coast.

Of course, it’s hard to say how deliberate even an elusive Alyx melon is. This could easily be a level artist mocking, putting groceries in the grocery bag, even when out-of-bounds walls, floors, and items become invisible to optimize. Odd priorities, for sure.

But if you need to rest during lunch during your virtual reality experience, well, it’s an option.
