‘Guardians’ of the Galaxy: Members of the US Space Force Get a New Name | US News

Members of the US Space Force will be known as “guardians”, it was announced on the first birthday of military service.

US Vice President Mike Pence said: “It is my honor, on behalf of the President of the United States, to announce that from now on the men and women of the United States Space Force will be known as Guardians.

“Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Guardians will defend our nation for generations to come.”

The announcement drew a quick response on social media, much of it ridiculing the Space Force, which has already been criticized for its logo and uniform since its creation by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, in December 2019.

One person wrote on Twitter: “Did it take you a year to create a Star Trek logo and a Marvel name? Your backup was Go-go Gadget Galactics or something?”

James Gunn, the writer and director of the 2014 Marvel Guardians Of The Galaxy film, also had some thoughts on the decision, tweeting “Can we sue this jerk?”

The Space Force said on Twitter that the name had “a long history in space operations, dating back to the original command motto of the Air Force Space Command in 1983, ‘Guardians of the High Frontier.”

“The Guardians name connects our proud heritage and culture with the important mission we carry out 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, protecting the people and interests of America and its allies.”

Space Force is the first new military service since the Air Force was created in 1947.

Its main goal is to improve the protection of American satellites and other space assets, rather than putting officers into orbit to carry out combat in outer space.

Originally, Trump wanted a Space Force that was “separate but equal” to the army, navy, and air force, but instead Congress made it part of the Department of the Air Force.

President-elect Joe Biden has yet to reveal his plans for the Space Force in the next administration.
