A British driver and his wife were among the four people killed after their car sank 75 meters into a ravine in the Spanish Canary Islands, according to reports.

The accident is said to have taken place after the vehicle drove off the edge of a highway in Galdar in the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria province.

A highway worker is believed to have noticed damage to a barrier and reported the wreckage Wednesday afternoon.

The pilot has been named in local reports as Richard and is believed to have worked for Norwegian Air Shuttle.

The airline confirmed his death. In a statement, Norwegian Air said: “Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of Relief Captain Richard Addicott during this sad time.”

It is believed that he was on vacation with his wife and they were visiting his father.

Reports said her father and sister were also in the car and were among the victims.

The accident is believed to have occurred Tuesday night during fog and rain.

No other vehicle is believed to have been involved in the accident.

Investigations continue.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development told Sky News: “We are supporting the family of a Briton after his death in Gran Canaria and we are in contact with the Spanish authorities.”
