A Scotsman captured the moment a bottlenose whale was swimming in the River Clyde in Glasgow.

James Newton captured the images showing a fin emerging from the depths of the city’s iconic river.

The images, shared on social media, sparked a debate over what was splashing the water, reports Glasgow Live.

He wrote: “Just to add to 2020 … the Clyde in town is now infested with sharks …”

The fin was spotted on the Clyde

While basking sharks have been seen in the river, others thought it might be a porpoise, a dolphin, or even an otter.

As with the Loch Ness monster sightings, many theories have been spread.

Now it has been confirmed that the animal is believed to be a bottlenose whale.

Scots took to social media to give their own suggestions.

Rebecca Turner wrote: “It will be a basking shark, you get them on the Clyde quite often!”

Kirsty Taylor said: “Northern bottlenose whale. They have been prowling probably one of them.”

Mark Gilespie wrote: “If you read the Scottish newspapers of the late 1930s, there was a total panic about the sharks in the Clyde. The front pages of all the newspapers for weeks and the shark hunt organized every weekend.”

Stuart Carr added: “Whatever it is. It’s feeding on the salmon that are returning to the tributaries of the Clyde to spawn.

“They won’t be hungry. There are tons now since the pollution stopped.”

The aquatic creatures of the Clyde nearly disrupted the major NATO war games in Scotland.

A special team from the Royal Navy had to be called in to move a herd of Wales around the Faslane submarine base earlier this month before Operation Joint Warrior.
