The FIA has moved to update the rules on tire use after George Russell’s unprecedented incident at the Sakhir GP.
A glitch in Mercedes’ messaging system led Russell to accidentally adjust the tires of his teammate Valtteri Bottas during the Sakhir Grand Prix, a problem that the Silver Arrows corrected by boxing with Russell again in the next. return.
An incident like that was the reason for a possible disqualification under the rule regulating the incorrect use of tires due to its ambiguity, but the stewards accepted that there were extenuating circumstances in the form of the radio error, for which they gave Mercedes € 20,000 . .
And since there had been no such incident before, the stewards requested that the FIA update the regulations, something that has been done in the latest edition of the F1 Sporting Regulations published by the World Motor Sport Council.
“Any driver who uses a set of tires of different specifications or tires that have not been assigned to him during the race will not be able to cross the line on the track more than twice before returning to the pits and changing them for a set of tires of the same specification, ”says the updated regulation.
A 10-second stop-and-go penalty is the penalty for a driver who does not change his wrong tires within three laps, as was the case under the previous rule.
It was also confirmed that Pirelli will continue to provide teams with the same standard tire allocation compared to the pre-2020 system, where teams made their own selections on how much of each tire compound they wanted for a race weekend.
That means teams will continue to receive eight sets of soft tires, three sets of medium tires and two sets of hard tires for one race weekend per driver.
Finally, the maximum time window to complete a race has been reduced.
Previously, a grand prix had to be completed in four hours, including red flag delays, but now it will be reduced to three hours.
