George Russell narrowly misses the inaugural pole position and Valtteri Bottas finishes qualifying faster

METERMercedes was able to persuade Williams to release Russell, who is a driver hired by Mercedes, to replace Hamilton, with his reserve driver. Jack Aitken taking Russell’s place for this weekend. Oh and let’s not forget that Pietro Fittipaldi – Emerson’s grandson – has replaced Grosjean at Haas to make his own F1 debut.

How has Russell settled into the W11? Pretty good so far. Yesterday he looked orderly and led the two free practice sessions with his partner Valtteri Bottas have a slightly scruffy day. In today’s final practice, however, he was a bit further off the beat, with Bottas and Max verstappen looking like the two men most likely to compete for pole. However, Russell is not out of this, and obviously hopes to improve in the rankings.

The track offers enough challenges for the drivers as well, with lots of twists and turns throughout the three sessions so far. The classification could be interesting. It all starts in just over an hour, but I’ll be here with updates in the meantime. I can not wait. Truly. Who Said Dead Tires Are Boring?
