Former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville believes Lionel Messi will stay at Barcelona despite submitting a transfer request.

Argentine forward Messi is pushing to move away from the Camp Nou after Barcelona’s humiliating 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The 33-year-old has been at Barça for almost two decades, winning an impressive number of collective and individual trophies, but sent a fax to the Spanish club last week saying he wants to leave for free with immediate effect.

Manchester City have become favorites to sign Messi, and Pep Guardiola is enjoying the prospect of joining a player he worked with in Spain.

But Neville still doubts that Messi will leave Barcelona, telling Sky Sports: ‘I think it’s politics and he’s fighting for power. Messi is flexing his muscles.

It’s probably a bit more than that, but I think that’s where it will end up in the end.

“The idea of Barcelona losing this player and not ending his career there seems incredible to me. Do you really want to leave? Perhaps.

But when the time comes and you have to meet with the president, the board, and everyone else who gets in your way, I think you will end up staying.

But if I came to the Premier League, I think it would be working with Pep.

‘I would like to see it? I think I would have to say yes, because the idea of seeing Messi up close, something I’ve done for the last 10 years, is something to behold.

“ I would like to stand in the way of all young fans in this country having the opportunity to have him up close when the fans return to the stadiums? No I would not.

But I just hope it doesn’t go very well with them!

Since making his first-team debut in 2004, Messi has scored 634 goals in 731 appearances for Barcelona, helping the club win ten La Liga and Champions League titles four times.
