Gary Neville casts doubt on ‘Project Restart’ after Boris Johnson comments

Gary Neville warned that Monday’s Premier League meeting could simply see that the league hopes to delay the ‘project restart’ after the prime minister’s speech on Sunday night.

League chiefs had been looking to Boris Johnson for guidance on how they could move forward with his plan to resume action on June 12, but Johnson’s speech made no mention of anything specific about the resumption of high-level sports.

He discussed that members of the public can exercise and play sports outdoors, but only with the people you live with, as he said nothing about sports at a professional level.

“Starting this Wednesday, we want to encourage people to do more and even unlimited amounts of exercise outdoors,” said Johnson.

Johnson headed to the UK on Sunday night

“You can sit in the sun at your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own home.”

In the battle to control the virus in general, he added: “It would be crazy now to throw that achievement away by allowing a second spike.

“We must be alert. We must continue to control the virus and save lives. “

Neville believes the announcements do not bode well for the Premier League, which he hopes will secure a firm commitment to return to training and eventually play games next week.

He tweeted: “I would be surprised if we did not see the PL at this meeting today, re-launching the ‘Project Restart’ plan.

“They’ve been hanging their hats at the guidance of the government. Their (sic) is nothing in that speech last night that consoles the Players / Dr in clubs.”

The league will discuss training protocols on Monday, and then seek more input from managers and players before voting on a comeback.
