Terrified and fed up residents living on a Sheffield estate under fire have attacked “gangs of people” who roam the streets and ignore the shutdown, two days after an embarrassing fight that sparked scenes of mayhem.
On Monday night, a fight led to troubling scenes on Popple Street, Page Hall, with more than 50 residents ignoring social distancing rules to see how the commotion unfolds.
Some residents who stayed indoors filmed the mess on their phones, and two residents have posted more photos and videos of illegal meetings seen in the area in the past few weeks since the closure was introduced.
A woman, who did not want to be named, said something is happening in Page Hall “every day” with “gangs” supposedly at all hours of the day ignoring the rules established to limit the spread of the coronavirus that has killed more than 32,000 people in the United Kingdom.

The 36-year-old man said, “It’s better than The Jeremy Kyle Show. Just open your front door and knock, you have some kind of action.

“It’s incredibly gross how many of these are out there and just stood in gangs chatting while the kids are doing who knows what. They just don’t understand the severity of this pandemic.
“There are gangs of people on the streets at all hours of the day. They let their children play on the streets at all hours and in all climates.
“These people who are breaking the blockade rules are giving us all a bad name. Not all of us live like animals and not all of us behave like animals.

The concerned resident said enduring the confinement in Page Hall and witnessing rebellious scenes outside her home has been a “nightmare.”
She says it has been a “scary time” and just wants her neighbors to follow government guidelines.

“I have been out of the house seven times since the lock has been in place,” he said. “I have followed all the rules that the stores have and I have kept myself six feet away from the rest.
“I refuse to leave my house if there are too many people on the streets and that does not help people with mental health problems.
“It is a terrifying time for everyone and this is what these people do not understand.”
Young rebels swear by residents

Jawad Saleem, the father of three, is another Page Hall resident who has simply had enough of people who continually ignore the closing rules.
He regularly sees a group of young men kick a soccer ball right outside his home with the gang even wiggling his middle finger on an occasion he captured on camera.
On Monday night, he said he saw two children fighting on Popple Street before people left their homes to engage in hand-to-hand combat.
He says that people often fight on the farm with dozens usually involved and he is desperate to alienate his family.
“It is like a show for them,” he said. “They don’t follow the rules and they hide from the police when they go out on patrol.”
“I have lived here three and a half years and have complained to the authorities. I have been shooting videos all that time and I am used to it being so, but I want to move from here.”

This is not the first time that residents of the Page Hall and Fir Vale area of Sheffield have faced criticism for ignoring the coronavirus blockade rules.
Former Burngreave councilman Ibrar Hussain feared in April that the the message was not to “pass on” to the people living there and asked the police to take tougher measures.
He said at the time: “Although soft focus is good, sometimes you have to be firmer because it is unfair to the people who live there.
“They are frustrated and angry that these crowds could spread the virus. Their lives have changed and their quality of life has decreased in this crisis and if the rules are not followed, then God help us.

“We have to take care of each other and taking care of the safety of others is paramount. The police are the only ones that can enforce this and they must be very firm.”
After Monday night’s commotion, police insisted that their officers had been “working hard to relate to people living in the Page Hall area about the importance of adhering to social estrangement.”
The force insists that only a small minority of people are breaking the restrictions.
A South Yorkshire police spokeswoman said: “Officers have been constantly conducting improved patrols, conversing with residents and businesses and dispersing people, as appropriate.
“We continue to have a highly visible presence in the area and have also examined different ways to communicate restrictions, including digital displays and brochures that are sent home.

“While there have been some challenges, most residents are complying with the restrictions and have taken their responsibility to protect others seriously.
However, there is a small number that continue to ignore the restrictions. In these cases, we have switched to the application to encourage compliance.
“We have issued a series of fixed penalty notices in the Page Hall area, and we have been served in response to a small minority of people who have continued to breach the restrictions despite the best efforts of our officers.”

A 20-year-old woman was injured in Monday’s fight and South Yorkshire police confirmed they are investigating the assault.
According to the force, around 50 people had to be dispersed and the officers ordered them to return to their homes.
A police spokeswoman said: “We received a call at 5.33 p.m. M. Yesterday (May 12) about reports of fighting on Popple Street in Sheffield.

“A group of around 50 people is reported to have been on the street causing disorder. Upon the arrival of the officers, the group was dispersed and sent back to their properties.
“An ambulance was called for a 20-year-old woman, she was discharged from the scene with minor injuries. Investigations are ongoing about an assault investigation. “
