The video shown at the Newcastle Crown Court, where Walmsley was sentenced on Friday, showed a woman arguing with the driver of a black Ford Focus on a busy Saturday night.

The Focus driver backed up quickly and tried to get away from the area, dangerously knocking the woman to the ground.

The woman’s boyfriend began protesting with the driver, but the vehicle accelerated toward him.

The groom was thrown across the street and crashed into a streetlight before the Focus driver quickly drove away from the scene.

The man and woman were able to get away from the collision without serious injury, and when the police located them they did not want to help with the investigation.

Northumbria police conducted their investigations without them, reviewed CCTV and found evidence of an argument before the incident and that the driver pushed the woman to the ground.

Officers identified the driver as Walmsley and admitted to causing actual bodily injury and driving dangerously in January.

The force said he was finally sentenced on Friday when Walmsley, of non-permanent address, was jailed for two years and one month and was prohibited from driving for five years and two months.

After the case, Detective Constable investigation officer Phil Hoggins said: “This was a very high-profile incident as video footage of the assault was shared thousands of times on social media.

“It took place on a busy Saturday in Newcastle in an area of the city center that was full of people enjoying a night out.

“Walmsley’s actions were dangerous, reckless, and put the lives of innocent people enjoying their evening at risk.

“Using your vehicle as a weapon can have serious consequences and both victims in this case were very lucky not to be seriously injured.”
