French police shot and killed a man suspected of killing a high school teacher by cutting his throat on the street in a Paris suburb.
The teacher had shown students in his class cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, a police officer told the Associated Press.
The incident occurred in the town of Eragny, in the Val d’Oise region northwest of Paris.
The alleged attacker was discovered by a police patrol while carrying a knife a short distance from the scene of the attack. Officers shot dead the suspected killer, the official continued.
The French antiterrorist prosecutor has opened an investigation into Friday’s incident outside the capital.
The teacher had been threatened after opening a discussion “for a debate” about the cartoons, the police officer told the AP.
France has suffered several terrorist attacks in recent years.
At the end of last month, a man allegedly used a butcher knife to attack and injure two people. outside the former offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
That was the place where Islamist militants gunned down magazine employees five years ago in retaliation for the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
