Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has revealed that Timo Werner was unable to take a penalty in the Blues’ penalty shootout loss to Tottenham due to a cramp.

The German scored his first goal for the club to put his team ahead in the first half at Tottenham Hotspur but Erik Lamela scored late to take the game to a penalty shootout.

Werner was expected to take a penalty shot, but the former RB Leipzig striker suffered a cramp in the final minutes.

Lampard asked Werner if he wanted to take a penalty, but the German declined the offer for fear of compounding his pain.

“We talked to the players,” Lampard said afterward.

“You work on penalties and you try to have a plan, but it is very difficult to know.

“Timo had a cramp at the end and Timo probably would have had one, so we had to adjust.”

All nine penalties were scored before Mason Mount took the Spurs ahead with a 5-4 lead, but the midfielder saw his effort hit the outside of the post to knock out Chelsea.

It is likely that Werner would have taken the place of Mount or Emerson Palmieri, who was to blame for Lamela’s draw.

Tottenham must wait until Thursday to meet their quarter-final opponents.
