Frank Lampard hopes to extend his contract with Chelsea to be part of the “long-term plan” at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s record scorer, Lampard, returned to West London as manager last summer and led the Blues to the Champions League qualification and FA Cup final in his first campaign.
The 42-year-old has overseen a rebuild of the £ 220m squad that now has Chelsea on a 15-game unbeaten streak in all competitions.
Lampard has admitted that he would enjoy the opportunity to increase the 18 months remaining on his current contract with Chelsea.
“In terms of my contract, the time I’ve been here seems to have flown by,” Lampard said.
“Okay, I have 18 months left and I felt it when I came to the club, I knew there were many circumstances at the beginning that were going to make last year transitory and maybe a little difficult.
“I felt like I took the job in a different position than more recent Chelsea coaches. I think people are sympathetic to that too and I think it was a success.”
“Now I feel like I would love to be part of the long-term plan here.
“The signings we made in the summer, apart from probably Thiago Silva in particular, were signings for now and for the future. Players who are going to progress and who will mature, and of course I would love to be part of that.
“Of course, that is the decision of the club and above all the decision of the owner, so I have to move forward with the short term that starts with Leeds.
“But I don’t think anyone would expect me to say anything else.
“I am a lucky man to run the club that I love and is my life. So of course I want to be successful and be here as long as I can.”
Lampard’s arrival at Chelsea last summer coincided with the appointment of his former teammate Petr Cech to the Stamford Bridge board.
Cech’s role as technical director has generated much greater symmetry between the coaching staff and the board.
Lampard sees that relationship as a genuine force for the Blues, but insisted that only owner Roman Abramovich has the right to create a scenario in which a manager can create a dynasty.
When asked if he was the right man to stay at the helm of Chelsea for the better part of a generation, Lampard replied: “That will only be decided by the owner and all I can do is look at what is in front of me and At the moment, Well, since I came here, the relationship I have with Petr has been a great strength for me because I get along very well with him and I think I hope we work well together.
“The communication I have with (the director) Marina Granovskaia is very regular.
“I try to do everything I can for the club, for the best of the club on and off the pitch and I can’t go much further than that.
“I said before that I would love to do this job as long as possible, but I am also very aware that it is based on results.
“At the moment, I think we are working towards achieving something and people are getting very excited and mention that this year we are in a race for the title.
“I always saw it as a longer plan than that and it could take us until next year to really challenge, because of the signings, because of the adaptation process.
“What we’re doing right now is really getting people excited, but I know we need to be consistent throughout the season.
“I’m not really thinking too much about my future. I’m just thinking game by game right now.
“I guess the future will take care of itself anyway after that.”
Lampard’s former teammate at Chelsea, Branislav Ivanovic, this week singled out the Blues manager as a future England manager.
While Lampard admitted that one day he would enjoy the opportunity to coach England, he insisted that he remains focused solely on trying to build a long-term future at Chelsea.
“First of all, I appreciate Brana’s words, he’s a good friend, so I appreciate the positive words,” Lampard said.
“It’s certainly not anything that’s on my radar in the short term. But I’m very patriotic, I loved playing for my country but right now I’m focused on trying to do my best here in the long term. Everything I can think of.
“But I appreciate it and if there was ever an opportunity later on, it’s something I would certainly look at, but you should never go too far in this job.”
