Formula 1 racing driver Romain Grosjean has survived a high-speed accident at the Bahrain Grand Prix, emerging from his car engulfed in flames after crossing a barrier.
The 34-year-old jumped out of his car, which was split in two, managing to escape after being inside the car while it was on fire for about 20 seconds.
The accident brought the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix to a halt on lap one, before the Frenchman limped off to an ambulance.
Now he is being treated in the hospital.
His F1 team Haas tweeted that he “has some minor burns on his hands and ankles, but otherwise he’s fine.”
“He’s with the doctors right now,” they added.
An FIA spokesman said the impact of the Grosjean crash was measured at 53G.
Replays showed the driver jumping over barriers and driving away from the burning wreckage of his car. He was escorted to an ambulance and he appeared to be limping.
The accident was triggered when Haas’s French driver swerved in front of Daniil Kvyat, making contact with his AlphaTauri.
Lewis Hamilton, who is aiming for his 11th F1 2020 win, tweeted that he was “very grateful that Romain is safe.”
He added: “Wow … the risk we take is not a joke, for those of you who forget that we risk our lives for this sport and for what we love to do.”
Haas team principal Guenther Steiner said: “Romain is fine, I don’t want to make a medical comment, but he had minor burns on his hands and ankles. He’s obviously shaking … I want to thank the rescue teams who are very Quick. Marshals and FIA people did a great job, it was scary. “
Karun Chandhok from Sky Sports, a former racing driver, said: “It looks like when the car went through the barriers, the back of the chassis where the engine is mounted, the engine mount broke off and ripped a bit off the chassis and so on. appears to have punctured the fuel bag. “
Work is underway to repair the significant damage to the road barriers where the accident occurred.
The race is expected to restart and there will be a 10 minute warning when Race Control plans to start again.
