TThe Labor Party is pushing for strict quarantine measures to be applied to all arrivals to the UK.
Last night in the House of Commons, the Labor Party called for the government-imposed 10-day quarantine to be extended immediately, due to fears about possible new variants of the virus. Conservative MPs abstained from voting.
Currently, only arrivals that have traveled from a list of 33 ‘red list’ countries, including swaths of South America, South Africa and Portugal, will be subject to the new rules.
Shadow Home Secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds said: “Covid is not going away. We need this strategy, and we need it now. “
He added: “I recognize, of course, the enormous challenges for the aviation sector and its supply chains, the impact on the hospitality and tourism industry, and the number of jobs it supports.”
However, he gave few details on timelines, practicalities, or how the industry could be helped, aside from widespread government support.
This morning, Universities Minister Michelle Donelan rejected the motion, telling the BBC that it was “unfeasible” to house all quarantined hotel arrivals, adding that “we have to be realistic about what we adopt and what we make”.
It is understood that the Cabinet is divided on whether to toughen the rules. Home Secretary Priti Patel is said to be among those who want tighter controls, while Transportation Secretary Grant Shapps favors a more targeted approach.
In Scotland, Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon is expected to announce broader hotel quarantine measures today.
