Fleetwood Town 2-5 Everton: Carlo Ancelotti’s team prepared for the West Ham tie

Everton beat Fleetwood in a spirited Carabao Cup match to set up a fourth-round draw against West Ham.

Richarlison led the Toffees ahead and then doubled their lead after a one-two with Alex Iwobi.

Mark Duffy gave League One Fleetwood hope, but Iwobi swept home from eight yards a minute later.

Callum Camps scored a bike kick for Joey Barton’s side before Bernard killed the game and Moise Kean scored in injury time.

There will be question marks about the performance of Everton and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford again.

His pass to half-time substitute Duffy allowed hosts Fleetwood to score their first goal and Camps’ aerial kick went straight for him.

Carlo Ancelotti named a strong team as Everton extended their winning start to the season to four games.

They dominated the first half, with Bernard and Iwobi closing in before Richarlison headed in from a Bernard cross and scored again from Iwobi’s heel.

Iwobi scored and assisted in the same match for the first time in his 180th club appearance.

Fleetwood was much better after the break and a shock seemed possible until Bernard’s sweet punch on the rebound.

Substitute Kean scored right at the end from Niels Nkounkou’s rear heel.

Everton, who beat West Brom by the same score on Saturday, have scored five or more goals in consecutive games for the first time since September 1964.

Everton manager Ancelotti did not blame Pickford for Fleetwood’s goals.

“I think the first goal was not an individual mistake. We passed the ball to Jordan and it was a really difficult ball,” said the Italian.

“You want to build from behind, but when there is no risk. If it is risky, it is not good. We can concede a goal like we did tonight and it is a good lesson for the future.”

“I didn’t talk to him. I have to talk to the players who were involved when we were building. He wasn’t the only one.”

Fleetwood boss Barton said his team “shot itself in the foot.”

“We adjusted at halftime, we brought in Duffy and then we got a gift by closing the goalie,” he added.

“Then we shot ourselves in the foot conceding a goal in a few minutes and then we did it again, but they have the quality to knock you down on the counter.

“I am pleased that we succeeded in a cup tie because at halftime it seemed like 45 minutes long.

“It pays us a lot of respect that they showed up and played the right way, especially when you look at the gulf in class at both clubs. 5-2 probably flatters them in the end, but they were way above us tonight.”
