Fireworks exploded against police officers patrolling the night of the bonfire

Police have received “numerous reports” of fireworks targeting officers during the night of the bonfires.

Gwent Police Chief Superintendent Tom Harding said he was “absolutely disgusted” following reports of officers setting off fireworks at his address on the night of November 5.

Police Chief Harding said officers were patrolling the force area Thursday night to make sure there were no gatherings in violation of lockdown restrictions.

He said that a firework could cause serious injury to an officer as he is not wearing protective gear to protect him from such an attack.

Police Chief Harding posted a short video on his Twitter account warning people that the force would seek to prosecute.

“I have to say that I am really disappointed and displeased that there have been numerous reports of fireworks at the direction of our officers,” he said.

“They are out and about like crazy tonight working incredibly hard to get to the reports of bonfires, gatherings, to reduce the impact they could have on the coronavirus and its spread in Wales.

“To think that there are people who are shooting fireworks at them that could cause significant injuries is really daunting.

“I have ordered them not to put themselves in danger. They do not have the protection against fireworks in relation to the equipment and equipment they carry.

“But we will get evidence. We will use CCTV, we will use body videos, and we will follow them and seek to prosecute anyone who puts officers in such danger.”

Emergency services have been working to ensure that communities in Wales are safe during Bonfire Night.

Earlier in the evening, a spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said the service was handling a large number of calls.

Deputy Chief Harding said: “Overall, people have been fantastic around the firewall and coronavirus regulations, but tonight they are incredibly disappointed with a very small minority.

“Finally, a big thank you from me to the officers who are literally putting themselves in danger tonight.”
