An entire five-story apartment block in New York is engulfed in flames as firefighters desperately try to save a neighboring church.

Terrifying photos show flames raging through every floor of the building and shooting several feet into the air from the room and outside the windows.

The flames spread to a neighboring 128-year-old church, local media reported.

Shocked crowds from the street watched as more than 100 firefighters sprayed water on the building to contain the fire in lower Manhattan.

Witnesses said the building was empty due to a previous fire. One claimed the fire started in a restaurant on the ground floor.

It was unclear if anyone was inside when the four-alarm blaze broke out around 5 a.m. local time Saturday.
