The Welsh Government will meet on Monday morning to make a decision on whether to implement a two- or three-week “firewall” lockdown.
A statement was issued on Sunday evening after the cabinet met to consider the advice of the Wales Technical Advisory Cell to carry out the lockdown to stop the growing spread of the coronavirus in Wales.
Nearly 1,000 new coronavirus cases in Wales were registered again on Sunday, bringing the infection rate from seven days to more than 130. Cardiff’s infection rate has risen significantly to 270 cases per 100,000 in the last week.
A leaked letter to transport operators in Wales suggested the Welsh Government is considering a 17-day shutdown that would entail the closure of all non-essential retail stores and hospitality, but that a decision has yet to be made on whether they would close All schools.
A spokesman for the Government of Wales said that the Prime Minister would inform the people of Wales of any decision to be made at the cabinet meeting on Monday morning.

The spokesperson said: “The measures that we have implemented both locally and nationally, with the help of the people of Wales, have kept the spread of Covid-19 in check.
“However, there is a growing consensus that we now need to introduce a different set of measures and actions to respond to the virus as it continues to spread through Wales more rapidly during the coming autumn and winter months.
“Ministers have held a series of meetings over the weekend with senior Welsh government officials, scientists and public health experts to consider their advice on the possible need for a set of ‘firewall’ measures to control the virus.
“The Welsh cabinet met tonight to consider that advice. The Cabinet will meet again tomorrow morning to make a final decision.
“The Prime Minister will brief the people of Wales on the decisions to be made tomorrow.”
