Sebastian Vettel will be replaced by a “young” driver who has “a few years” of experience in Formula 1, says Piero Ferrari.
Vettel imploded the driver market on Tuesday morning when it announced that it would leave Ferrari at the end of this season.
The four-time world champion reportedly forced Ferrari to make the announcement by leaking the news the night before.
Vettel said in his statement that “there is no longer a common desire to stay together beyond the end of this season” and would therefore be leaving.
His seat is expected to go to Carlos Sainz or Daniel Ricciardo, who were rumored to be at the top of the Ferrari list.
Mick Schumacher has also been mentioned in the mix as many fans would love to see the German follow in his father’s footsteps.
But it seems that Sainz is the most likely candidate to partner with Charles Leclerc next season.
Speaking to the Italian ANSA agency, Ferrari, the only living son of Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari, declined to name names, but gave the criteria for the next Scuderia driver.
He said: “It is correct to support Leclerc because he is an intelligent and very talented boy who grew up at our Ferrari Academy.
“Do you support another young man? I would definitely like to do it, but Ferrari is not the place for a young man coming from Formula 2.
“Perhaps a young man who already has a few years of experience would be much better.”
At 25 years old, Sainz adjusts to that billing, while Ricciardo, who is 30 years old, is a few years old.
