Two-time F1 world champion Alonso was involved in an accident while driving through the outskirts of Lugano at lunchtime on Thursday, leaving the Spaniard hospitalized.

Alpine issued a statement Thursday night saying Alonso was “conscious and well on his own”, awaiting further testing.

Sources have indicated to Motorsport.com that Alonso is now scheduled to be transferred to a hospital in Bern, where he will be operated on for some broken teeth.

It is understood that Alonso got off the motorcycle while braking hard to avoid an impact with a car while traveling on the road.

The first indications are that Alonso has not suffered a fracture in the accident, but is scheduled to undergo further medical tests on Friday.

The Alpine team is ready to offer more updates on your condition later today.

Alonso is set to make his return to F1 this year after two seasons out of the series, with his last grand prix coming to McLaren in late 2018.

Since then, Alonso has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice for Toyota, along with a World Endurance Championship title, and has also competed in the Indianapolis 500 and the Dakar Rally.

Alonso announced last summer that he would return to F1 with Renault, which has since been renamed Alpine, to mark his third stint with the Enstone-based team.

Alonso raced for Renault between 2003 and 2006, winning the world drivers’ championship in 2005 and 2006, before spending a season at McLaren. A return to Renault in 2008 gave him another two victories before switching to Ferrari for 2010.

A second McLaren season followed from 2015 to 2018, but the team’s decline in fortunes on the track left Alonso increasingly frustrated, leading him to explore avenues outside of F1.

This led to Alonso making his Indy 500 debut in 2017 when he set his sights on the Motorsport Triple Crown, looking to add victories at Indianapolis and Le Mans to his victories in Monaco.

He is scheduled to make his official return to the track ahead of the new pre-season testing season, which begins in Bahrain on March 12.
