Three people were rushed to hospital after an explosion that destroyed a home and started a massive fire today.

The explosion, which shook houses like an ‘earthquake’ according to witnesses, destroyed a building, but residents of six surrounding houses were also forced to flee their homes as a safety measure.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said the three people were treated at the scene before being taken to hospital. The extent of his injuries has not been confirmed.

Today, dramatic images showed the devastating damage caused by the blast heard more than three miles away, causing an entire house to ‘disappear’.

One resident said he received a phone call from his mother in Bradshaw, about a mile from where the blast occurred after she heard a “big bang.”

The circumstances surrounding the blast are still unknown, but Michael Dunn said the blast could be ‘heard and felt’ in Denholm, approximately 3.5 miles from the scene.

Mr Dunn said: ‘I just got a call from my mother in Bradshaw, she heard a big bang like an explosion upstairs so she called to see if everything was okay.

“There were emergency services everywhere, and within a five minute walk this house was gone, it was heard and felt in Denholm.”

Fire crews are working with the West Yorkshire Police and Yorks Ambulance, Calderdale City Council and utility companies to deal with the aftermath of the blast.

The incident was initially attended by teams from Fairweather Green, Halifax and Odsal with specialist units from Cleckheaton and Dewsbury.

Investigations into the cause of the blast are underway and crews are managing the “remaining pockets of fire” at the scene.

The fire service said crews are likely to be on the scene for some time.

A spokesman for the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Crews are dealing with the remaining pockets of fire which will be extinguished should they appear.

“Firefighters are likely to be on the scene for some time.”

He added: “Investigations are continuing into the cause of the explosion.”

After the blast, neighbors began a fundraising effort on Facebook for those involved.

“We of the Illingworth community should come together and support this family as much as we can … let’s make this community support work as soon as possible,” wrote a member of the public.

Some volunteered to donate clothing and food to the family through local businesses and charities.
