Martin Lewis of MoneySavingExpert has issued a warning to customers who want to pay cash in supermarkets.
During the course of the coronavirus pandemic, shoppers have been encouraged to only use card payments in an attempt to reduce the spread.
Most stores even raised their contactless card limit to £ 45 to help facilitate this.
But can stores prevent you from paying cash?
The short answer is yes: Stores will not violate any rules if they decline cash payments, according to Martin Lewis.
Speaking on ITV’s Martin Lewis Money Show, he explained exactly why this was the case.
He was asked through a tweet that said: “Many companies [are] Cash is not accepted as a form of payment, only card. Are you sure that cash is still legal tender? Are they breaking the law by doing this? “
Lewis replied, “No, they are not breaking any rules.
“You are allowed to be a card only as long as it is not discriminatory because of race or disability or something like that.
“The legal tender is interesting.
“Legal tender has a strict definition. It means that if you have a debt awarded by a court against you, if someone is trying to reach an agreement and is paying in legal tender, they cannot reject it.
“And that’s all it means.”
