Everton vs Southampton lineups as James Rodríguez did amid Carlo Ancelotti’s mind games

Gordon has a point to prove with Richarlison out

Phil Kirkbride: Richarlison’s suspension means Ancelotti has to make a decision on the left wig.

He said Bernard is an option, but he’s been more comfortable playing further back this season, so it appears to be a straight run between Alex Iwobi and Anthony Gordon.

Iwobi did well when he came in against Brighton and had a good cup game against Fleetwood and you could understand why Ancelotti, against a packed Southampton defense, would support him.

But Gordon has a point to prove and his cameo against Fleetwood was one of the most impressive bench performances seen in some time. A player with a bite between his teeth like Gordon can be dangerous.

In midfield, and considering what Ancelotti has said about facing the “compact” Southampton, perhaps it is time for Gylfi Sigurdsson to return to the starting eleven.

My team (4-3-3): Pickford, Godfrey, Keane, Mina, Digne, Allan, Doucoure, Sigurdsson, Rodríguez, Calvert-Lewin, Gordon

Rodriguez is too influential

Adam Jones: Will it play? Did not play?

The big question facing Everton this weekend, of course, centers on James Rodriguez.

If you are in shape, then you have to start. It could be argued that he may not have been fully fit yet during his time at the club, but he has proven too influential to be left out.

Other than that there should still be a couple of Carlo Ancelotti changes, one applied and one not.

Alex Iwobi should be the man called in to replace Richarlison, having looked great against Brighton in particular in that role earlier this season. Anthony Gordon will have to wait for the moment.

Meanwhile, the addition of Gylfi Sigurdsson in midfield could really help Everton in terms of breaking down what will be a compact and tough Southampton to play with.

He scored an incredible goal in a game we’d rather forget a few years ago at St Mary’s, however hopefully he can produce the goods in a winning match for the Blues this time.

My team (4-3-3): Pickford; Godfrey, Mina, Keane, Digne; Allan, Doucoure, Sigurdsson; Rodríguez, Calvert-Lewin, Iwobi

Godfrey will receive his full debut

Connor O’Neill: It should be one more case of the same for Carlo Ancelotti when he chooses his Everton team for this afternoon’s clash with Southampton.

It’s hard to see the Blues boss making too many unforced changes to what has become the norm so far this season for today’s clash on the South Coast.

Jordan Pickford will no doubt start in goal, while Ben Godfrey will replace Seamus Coleman, with Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne in the last four.

Then it will be a three midfield from Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Andre Gomes, with James Rodriguez, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Alex Iwobi leading the way.

However, if Rodriguez doesn’t make it, then one hopes to see Anthony Gordon replace the former Real Madrid player.

My team (4-3-3): Pickford, Godfrey, Keane, Mina, Digne, Allan, Doucoure, Gomes, Rodríguez, Iwobi, Calvert-Lewin.
