When the match list came out before the start of the season, it might not have been a huge surprise if someone had told you that the Merseyside derby would feature a team that would top the Premier League table.
However, if you had learned that that side is Everton, you would have been taken by surprise.
The Toffees have been perfect: four wins out of four and playing brilliant football with Carlo Ancelotti.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin can’t stop scoring and, in James Rodriguez, Everton has a true superstar.
Liverpool are three points behind their local rivals after being beaten 7-2 by Aston Villa before the international break.
Will the Reds fight back? Or will the Blues continue their sensational start to the season?
Our reporters have expressed their opinion …
Simon Mullock – Everton 2-2 Liverpool
Everton’s record against rivals is appalling, illustrating the quality gap between the two teams in recent years.
But the Blues are now a different beast under Carlo Ancelotti and I can see they are giving Liverpool a lot of trouble at Goodison.
Jurgen Klopp will be looking for an answer of his own after the collapse at Villa, so I am predicting an exciting game with goals to end the draw.
Neil Moxley – Everton 1-1 Liverpool
Of late, the Merseyside derby has been a more cautious affair than it sounds, particularly at Goodison Park.
And particularly when Sam Allardyce was in charge.
There is no reason for Everton to change their winning formula. Carlo Ancelotti has a full hand of players at his disposal.
Interestingly, Liverpool is the one with questions to answer. Sending seven goals when you are the reigning champion is not a good look.
It’s hard to see anything other than another tight matter. Sorry to have splinters in my butt, but it’s 1-1 for me.

James Nursey – Everton 1-1 Liverpool
Liverpool will be hurt and eager to answer for their 7-2 embarrassment at Aston Villa, but top-of-the-table Everton are fit and confident.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the home team attack first through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who should be fresh after being just a late substitute for England against Denmark.
Liverpool might take a while to get the game right after the break, but I can see them struggling to regain level in the second half, perhaps through Mo Salah, in a tight game that maybe a bit anticlimax with no fans in the game. ground at Goodison.
Andy Dunn – Everton 3-1 Liverpool
Having had a front row seat to Aston Villa’s attack on the champions, it’s hard to erase the fresh memory of Liverpool’s stark vulnerability that night.
His overwhelming modern superiority in derby matches is on display for all, but so was the ease with which Villa overlooked Jurgen Klopp’s defense.
In all competitions at Goodison Park this season, Everton is four out of four, having scored 16 goals.
If there are concerns about Jordan Pickford, there should be more serious concerns about Adrian.
Everything points to a rare victory for Everton.
David Maddock – Everton 1-1 Liverpool
Seven of the last eight derbies at Goodison have ended in a draw, and the last three have ended 0-0, so it’s a fair bet, another draw is on the cards, especially given that Ancelotti has been successful against Liverpool with Napoli keeping it tight. .
Mike Walters 0-0 Everton Liverpool
If in doubt about the Merseyside derby, always go for Shakespeare’s option – much ado about nothing.
Do you seriously think that Liverpool will concede seven again after their black Saturday at Aston Villa? No possibility.
And the fact that Everton have not won a derby for 10 years does not necessarily mean that the duck is broken now.
This match was a colossal boredom behind closed doors after the lockout, and while I expect more pace and urgency this time, both coaches, for different reasons, will have a clean sheet as their top priority.
Unfortunately, your wishes are likely to be honored.
David Anderson – Everton 1-2 Liverpool
The Evertonians will feel this is their best chance to end their 10-year wait for a Merseyside derby win.
Carlo Ancelotti is working his magic, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is hitting them and James Rodriguez, arguably the best transfer window signing, is pulling the strings.
Ancelotti has successfully changed the mindset of Everton and had an inferiority complex when it came to Liverpool, which meant they were often beaten before leaving the dressing room.
A packed Goodison would have helped Everton and it would have been a fantastic atmosphere due to the good start for the Blues.
However, it would be a mistake to rule out Liverpool due to their 7-2 hammering by Aston Villa and the best team in the world in 2019 has not suddenly turned into a bad thing overnight.
Liverpool were horrible that night, unrecognizable from Klopp’s conquering side, and could easily have lost by double digits.
Klopp will not need to speak as a team after that debacle and the players will be excited to show everyone that the loss was a strange result.
Skipper Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane will also return to add experience, character and class to the side.
Adrián will continue to be in goal and I can see goals for both sides because both are better in attack than in defense.
I think Everton will finally score their first goal against Klopp at Goodison and the streak of three straight goalless draws will come to an end.
But I think Liverpool will have a little more power in the penalty shoot-out and back them up to win.
Mark Jones – Everton 1-2 Liverpool
The law of averages weighs heavily on this derby.
The last three meetings at Goodison Park ended 0-0, so surely that won’t happen again.
Everton have won their last seven games in all competitions so the streak has to end somewhere, right?
Liverpool conceded seven goals in a match for the first time since 1963 in their last match, so it definitely won’t happen again. Well, almost definitely.
And Saturday will mark exactly 10 years since Everton last won a Merseyside derby, when Roy Hodgson’s Reds were beaten 2-0 at Goodison. That race will have to end at some point.
But this time? Not.
Everton are progressing steadily and it looks like they are going to have a pretty good season, but Liverpool will have three of their best players coming back here and they are simply the best team.
Indeed, if Everton take the match to Liverpool in this match for once, it could end up playing in the hands of the visitors.
If they play anywhere near the level they did when they beat Chelsea and Arsenal, the Reds will have too much.
