Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti has ruled out James Rodriguez for Manchester United’s visit in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Rodriguez is individually working on his fitness at Finch Farm after missing the last three games with a calf injury.
Ancelotti also confirmed that rumors on social media that Jean-Philippe Gbamin had suffered another setback in his recovery from a long-term Achilles injury suffered over the summer were false.
The Italian insists that Rodriguez suffers from a minor problem, but cannot call on his services for the cup tie with United at Goodison Park.
Ancelotti said: “James is not available.
“We are not concerned. We are sad that James is an important player for us, but if he can’t play, he’s not ready, we can’t push him and force him to come back.”
Take our Everton 30-second transfer survey and let us know what Carlo Ancelotti should do in the January window.
“We have to wait a bit so that he can return well and correctly.
“The season ends in May. Not just for James, for all players, they need to have a proper plan to avoid problems in the future, and maybe when the season is more important than now.
“I think at least he can be available for the next game, or the next one. We have games every three days.
“Actually, he’s working individually. So he has to start working with the team before he starts playing.”

Gbamin has played just 135 minutes of first-team action for Everton since his £ 25 million move from Mainz in 2019 following an initial quadriceps injury sustained in training.
He suffered another setback on his return that required surgery before a cruel Achilles injury struck him in training in May.
Rumors circulated on social media earlier in the week suggesting that he had once again been the victim of an injury, but Ancelotti insisted it will be available soon.
He said: “The truth is that we have [Gbamin] back and we’re looking for it.
“We want to make a proper entry for him with the squad, so we are taking our time because he has had a lot of injuries.
“We have to take care of ourselves and be careful with him.”
