Manchester United face a tie test in the round of 16 of the Europa League after being tied against La Liga leaders Real Sociedad, while Arsenal must overcome Benfica and Tottenham face the Austrian Wolfsberger.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s team was eliminated from the Champions League last week and his reward is a showdown with the team that leads Atlético de Madrid on goal difference but has played two more games.

It will be United’s first meeting with the Basque club since the group stage of the 2013-14 Champions League, when David Moyes’ side beat them 1-0 at Old Trafford after an own goal by Iñigo Martínez and tied the 0-0 away game, Robin van Persie miss a penalty. Moyes spent a year as a manager of the Society before leaving in November 2015.

As seeded, United will play the second leg at home, the first to be played the week before at Anoeta Stadium on February 18. The Society, led by Imanol Alguacil, has only lost once in La Liga this season and now has former Manchester City midfielder David Silva on its roster after he joined last summer after more than a decade in English football.

United won the Europa League competition with José Mourinho in May 2017 and reached the semi-finals last season, losing to eventual champions Sevilla.
