Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood’s mistake is just the latest in a long line of embarrassing episodes that have plagued Gareth Southgate’s England team.
The team’s three most recent games have been affected by the behavior of different team members, starting with a fight between Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez in November.
The clash, revealed exclusively by Sportsmail, came in the run-up to two Euro 2020 qualifiers against Montenegro and Kosovo, and was in the wake of the meeting of the couple’s clubs, Manchester City and Liverpool, on the pitch.
Sterling tried to grab Gomez by the neck after he arrived at the players’ canteen, the day after tempers had raged between them on the field.
Covid-19 put an end to international football until this week, and preparation for England’s first game against Iceland was hampered by the arrest of Harry Maguire while on vacation in Mykonos.
The Manchester United captain stayed home after being arrested in Greece but appealed his convictions and will face a full new trial after appealing the decision last week.
In a statement printed in the Greek publication Protothema, one of the officers who detained him on the night of the disorder recalled that the 27-year-old Maguire launched a torrent of abuse when he was arrested while reportedly trying to protect his sister.
The statement alleges that Mr. Maguire yelled: ‘Fuck you all, fuck you, fuck the Greek police, fuck the cops, screw Greece, screw Greek civilization, I don’t give a shit ‘.
The statement added that Maguire, “attacked the sergeant … pushed him and kicked him in the right leg causing swelling of his left and right tibia.”
Now, in preparation for England’s Nations League game against Denmark on Tuesday, Greenwood and Foden have once again cast a shadow over the team.
