The Liverpool captain underwent groin surgery last month and faces a long road to recovery
England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed his fears that midfielder Jordan Henderson will miss Euro 2020 due to his groin injury.
Henderson underwent surgery for the injury last month and was out for at least five weeks.
But the Liverpool captain could be out for much longer, casting doubt on his availability for the rescheduled tournament, which starts in June.
What was said?
“In terms of promises, we can only say that Hendo himself is very optimistic about how the operation went and the prognosis that the specialist has given him of what is possible,” said Southgate.
“We are aware that with any injury of this nature, there is a guide and a defined time, but that anything can happen along the way.
“We know that it will be near the end of the season and we will have to see how it goes. He will give himself every chance to be available.
“And of course we also know that he is likely to be missing game minutes in high-level matches.
“There are many things to consider but, for the moment, that is a decision with a few weeks to go.”
What impact would Henderson’s absence have?
Henderson has been a regular for the Three Lions for several years, playing a key role as England reached the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup.
The 30-year-old has continued to regularly participate in Southgate since the tournament in Russia, winning 58 career caps.
Although his absence would be a blow, England seem to have the depth in central midfield to cope.
Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Mason Mount are just a few of Southgate’s options at Henderson’s position.
