The Eiffel Tower has been evacuated and armed police are standing guard after a man allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” and threatened to “blow up everything,” it was reported.

Paris police agreed to a large area around the landmark in the French capital and urged people to stay away while officers inspect the area to find out if the threat is legitimate.

An anonymous person is said to have told police that a bomb had been planted at the site, which is normally visited by tens of thousands of people every day.

Without citing a source, the journalist Amaury Bucco, who published photos of the police cordon, affirmed on Twitter: “The perimeter of the Eiffel Tower is cordoned off, a police operation in progress: a man shouted Allahu Akbar and threatened to blow everything up.”

The photos and video show police armed with rifles as officers block roads and pedestrian paths around the tower.

The drama unfolded after an anonymous person told police there was a bomb at the scene around 12 p.m. local time, Actu reported.

The Eiffel Tower was closed for three months during a strict coronavirus lockdown in France.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris normally attracts tens of thousands of visitors a day.

It reopened with restrictions in June and has remained open despite a large spike in cases during the country’s second wave of Covid-19.

From time to time, it is evacuated or closed due to bomb threats, suspicious items, or other emergencies.

In May and October last year, visitors were ordered to leave due to people climbing the tower.

The landmark was evacuated and closed for two hours in May 2018 due to a bomb threat that police determined was a hoax.

A suspicious package led to an evacuation in June 2017. A bomb squad reviewed the item and found it posed no threat.

The tower was evacuated twice in September 2010 due to bomb threats that turned out to be hoaxes.
