Edinson Cavani scored a decisive goal in the closing minutes for Manchester United in their 2-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final victory against Everton on Wednesday, but perhaps he was lucky to be on the field.
VAR has caused a lot of controversy in the Premier League this season and its absence from the Carabao Cup was always going to be a potential talking point.
The technology hasn’t been used in competition all season and that was good news for United striker Cavani.
Cavani seemed to grab Mina by the neck.
Cavani later went unpunished for the incident.
The Uruguayan international appeared to grab Everton defender Yerry Mina by the neck early in the second half.
Mina fell to the ground holding her neck, but it seemed that the referee had completely missed the incident.
Replays showed Cavani raised his hand towards the defender and if the VAR had been in use, the referee may have been asked to verify the incident.
Gary Lineker tweeted about what happened and felt Cavani may have been a bit lucky to be on the field.
He tweeted: “Cavani would have seen red with VAR.”
Minutes later, there was a second incident that the VAR could have re-examined had it been in use.
Bruno Fernandes, without contesting the ball, fell back towards Richarlison and then the Brazilian collided with Eric Bailly.
The Everton striker was hit hard and had to be replaced immediately with a head injury.
But, as the road always seems to be, it was the Uruguayan forward who appeared with a winner to send the Red Devils to the semifinal.

It was also a brilliant goal. Anthony Martial introduced Cavani and threw the ball into the far corner.
Then Martial stepped onto the roster in the closing seconds of the game to seal the score 2-0 and reserve his spot in the semifinal.
In the same night’s draw, they were handed a home draw against archrival Man City.
Speaking about the Cavani and Mina incident after the game, United manager Solskjaer said: “It’s two South Americans who have had some battles before. Not long ago, I think they met in qualifying for the Copa América ”.
