Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that Edinson Cavani has an important role to play for Manchester United and has even hinted that the Uruguayan could extend his stay at Old Trafford.
The 33-year-old joined the club on a one-year contract in October, leaving Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent after seven years in the French capital.
Though Cavani has mostly been reduced to cameo roles so far – the last thing he saw him come off the bench to prepare Bruno Fernandes for United’s second goal against Leicester – Solskjaer has no doubt there is more to come from the forward.
“He’s definitely a starter, you don’t classify a player of his quality like anything else,” Solskjaer said.
“I trust him and that’s the point, we have good competition for places, but he will probably start more games than he doesn’t.”
With Cavani’s deal that includes an option to extend his stay for one more season, Solskjaer believes the forward could have an impact not just for the rest of this season but beyond.
“He’s so meticulous, professional, his habits, everything about him shows why he’s had the career that he’s had,” Solskjaer added.
“At the moment he seems to have a few years left, even at his age, he’s still one of the fittest players we have.”
“I wouldn’t say anything but that he has had a huge impact when he came here and let’s focus on improving everyone.”
Neville: Man Utd should only buy if the correct player is available
Gary Neville looks at whether Manchester United need to enter the January transfer market and whether manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can afford not to have Bruno Fernandes or Harry Maguire in his starting lineup.
United beat Everton 2-0 at Goodison Park on Wednesday night to advance to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, where they will meet Manchester City.
As a result, Solskjaer’s side have now won their last 14 away games in all competitions, a streak that has seen the club move just five points behind Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, and with one game less than the Champions. .
Solskjaer himself has downplayed the suggestion that United are title contenders, insisting “it’s not something we talk about,” so what does the former club captain think?
