The Queensferry Crossing was closed to traffic in “very difficult” conditions on the roads in and around Edinburgh this morning (Friday 4 December).
The bridge was off-limits due to falling ice and snow, according to BEAR Scotland, and all traffic was diverted via the A985 Kincardine Bridge. Later in the day, a flood warning was issued for Edinburgh with several areas experiencing blocked roads due to flooding.
Chris Tracey, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridge Manager, said: “The safety of the bridge users comes first and therefore we have made the decision to temporarily close Queensferry Crossing due to ongoing adverse weather conditions. .
“We are constantly monitoring the structure in real time using a custom weather sensor system on the Queensferry Crossing towers and roof.
“We apologize for any inconvenience caused to road users by this closure and we will reopen the bridge when it is safe to do so.”
Traffic Scotland reported around 6am that winter conditions on the City Bypass, M8 and M90 were making things “VERY difficult”.
Reports come in tonight that Leith’s water has overflowed at various points in the capital.
