A 3.3 magnitude earthquake was felt in several cities in England.

People living in Leighton Buzzard and Dunstable, Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes and Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire said they felt it around 09:45 BST.

Carly Jan Smith, 31, at Dunstable, said it was “really strong” and lasted about two seconds. Her whole room was “side to side,” she said.

The British Geological Survey said it hit just north of Leighton Buzzard.

Bedfordshire police said there were no reports of injuries, although they had received a large number of calls.

Dr Richard Luckett from the British Geological Survey confirmed the earthquake, saying: “It was very mild on a global scale, but still quite large for the UK.

‘Possibility of replicas’

“We get around two of these a year, which is rare in the UK.”

He said there was a small chance that aftershocks would occur, “but it is very likely that they will not be felt.”

John Yorke, a computer programmer at Woburn Sands, Bedfordshire, said: “It felt like a subtle shake in the house that made the windows rattle.

“My initial thought was to look out the window expecting to see that a car had crashed into our property. I had not felt anything like it before.”

‘Shaken Foundation’

Dunstable’s Ms Smith told BBC Three Counties Radio: “I was in my room and I thought my stepfather was doing something in the garage because the whole room was moving back and forth, with a lot of force.

“It was as if the foundations under me had been shaken.”

Karen Cursons, a 56-year-old city councilor, said: “I felt it.

“We’ve been at Leighton Buzzard for 34 years and I’ve never felt anything like this.”

Christine Sawyer, who lives in a mobile home in Caddington, said he had left her “really scared” because she feared her property had broken the mooring.

“The whole place shook, it felt like something had hit the side of the house,” he said. “My dog was thrown out of his chair!”
