Prince Philip has been transferred back to the private hospital where he was first admitted almost three weeks ago after heart surgery at one of Europe’s leading cardiac facilities.

The Duke of Edinburgh underwent successful heart surgery on Wednesday at St Bartholomew Hospital, just three months before his 100th birthday.

He had been transferred there from the private King Edward VII’s, and has returned there to continue his recovery.

Prince Philip is expected to stay in the hospital at least until the end of next week.

Buckingham Palace said on Friday: “Following the Duke of Edinburgh’s successful procedure at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital on Wednesday, His Royal Highness has been transferred to King Edward VII Hospital this morning.

“The Duke is expected to remain in the hospital to continue treatment for several days.”

Buckingham Palace said the duke, the nation’s longest-serving consort, underwent the procedure for his pre-existing heart condition at London’s St Bartholomew Hospital.

Now he has returned to King Edward VII Hospital in central London to continue his recovery.

The Palace said the 99-year-old duke will remain in the hospital for “treatment, rest and recovery” for several days.

Concern for the Duke is set to rise due to his advanced age, with the Duchess of Cornwall saying on Wednesday that Prince Philip was “improving slightly” adding: “We will keep our fingers crossed.”

The Duke has been treated for heart problems in the past and in 2011 he was rushed to the hospital by helicopter from Sandringham after suffering chest pains as the royal family prepared for Christmas.

In serious health condition, he was treated for a blocked coronary artery at Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire and underwent a minimally invasive coronary stenting procedure.

St Bartholomew’s is home to the Barts Heart Center, the largest specialist cardiovascular service in Europe.

The Palace declined to give details of the exact surgery.

The Duke is a sponsor of the British Heart Foundation (BHF), which sent its best wishes and said the Duke has been a “long-term advocate of heart research”.

Prince Philip was initially admitted to the private King Edward VII Hospital in central London on February 16 after feeling ill, before being transported by ambulance to St. Bartholomew on Monday.

Now he has spent 17 nights in the hospital, his longest stay.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “The Duke of Edinburgh underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition yesterday at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital.

His Royal Highness will remain in the hospital for treatment, rest and recovery for several days. “

Philip was visited at King Edward VII Hospital on February 20 by his eldest son, the Prince of Wales, who made a 200-mile round trip and stayed for about 30 minutes.

The Duke has spent most of his confinement at Windsor Castle with the Queen for her safety, along with a small family of staff nicknamed HMS Bubble.

The couple, who have been married for 73 years, received their first hits from Covid-19 in January.
