A woman died this morning after a terror crush on the M8.
The driver was the only person in the car during the tragic accident on the eastbound road in Shotts, North Lanarkshire, shortly after 4 am.
The highway is closed westbound between junction four and junction five for a police investigation.
The Record reported today that there was one death in the accident, but it has now been confirmed that the victim is a female.
The closure caused traffic chaos with long collapses throughout the day, and it is not yet known when the highway will reopen.
Chief Inspector Darren Faulds said: “Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the person who sadly lost his life in this incident.
“We understand that closing a major route has caused significant disruption to motorists and we thank you for your patience as we continue to respond to this serious incident.
“I would ask any driver using the M8 in the early hours of this morning who has witnessed the incident, or has dash cam footage of the incident, to contact the police.
Traffic Scotland has reported long lines on the road, urging motorists to avoid the route if possible, as detours are heavily congested.
After the fatal accident this morning, there was another serious accident on the M8.
A truck and lorry crashed at Junction 6A Chapelhall around 7.45am, causing traffic chaos.
A crushed traffic management truck was photographed after crashing into the rear of an HGV, with the front end and windshield completely destroyed.
A man was taken to hospital after the second accident.
