A driver has died trying to break a British ground speed record at a Yorkshire airfield.
In a statement, Motorsport UK said it was “deeply saddened” to announce the fatal accident on Thursday.
The agency added that “together with the organizer of the event and the local police, it has launched a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident.”
He continued: “More information will be provided once the initial findings of the investigation are available.
“Our thoughts go out to the driver’s family, who have been briefed, the event organizers and other members of the motorsports community present.”
North Yorkshire Police said: “Shortly after 4.30pm … police were called into a serious collision at Elvington Airfield near York.
“The agents are on the scene with the ambulance service.
“Please do not attempt to access the airfield at this time.”
Elvington Airfield is where former Top Gear host Richard Hammond crashed in 2006.
The 50-year-old man was left in a coma for two weeks and with brain damage.
