Dramatic drop in number of new confirmed coronavirus cases in Leicester and Leicestershire

There has been a dramatic drop in the number of newly confirmed coronavirus cases in the city and county.

More than 350 cases were confirmed both yesterday and Wednesday, and before that there were six days in which cases exceeded 200.

Today, however, only 128 new cases have been confirmed in Leicester and Leicestershire. About 56 cases were in the city and the remaining 72 were spread across the county.

Broken down to the district and borough level, Charnwood added 22 new cases to its rolling toll.

The totals for Oadby and Wigston and Hinckley and Bosworth have risen by 15, and Blaby saw 11 new infections identified.

Five cases were reported in North West Leicestershire, three in Harborough and only one in Melton.

Yesterday 366 cases were added to the daily board in the city and county.

The accumulated local figures (since the beginning of the pandemic) for Friday, October 16 are:

Leicester: 8,439 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 2,382

Blaby: 1,120 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 1,103

Charnwood: 2,004 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 1,078

Harborough: 767 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 817

Hinckley and Bosworth: 982 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 868

Melton: 373 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 728

North West Leicestershire: 650 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 627

Oadby and Wigston: 1,021 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 1,790

In other coronavirus news, the owners of a Leicester bar decided to shut it down after their business was reported as failing to meet Tier 2 coronavirus restrictions.

The owners of Babelas Continental Bar, on Queens Road in the Clarendon Park area of ​​the city, decided to close the bar for the time being, rather than risk a fine.

Meanwhile, a county council report has revealed the areas of Leicestershire that have seen the most confirmed coronavirus cases in the latest biweekly data available.

Leicester: 8,383 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 2,367

Blaby: 1,109 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 1,092

Charnwood: 1,982 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 1,066

Harborough: 764 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 814

Hinckley and Bosworth: 967 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 855

Melton: 372 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 726

North West Leicestershire: 645 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 623

Oadby and Wigston: 1,006 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 1,764
