Donald Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, contracted the coronavirus.
The key aide briefed a close circle of advisers after the election, the outcome of which is still unclear, although Joe Biden is the front-runner and has the lead in the remaining key states.
In addition to Meadows, a Trump campaign assistant, Nick Trainer, is also infected with Covid-19, reports Bloomberg, who were the first to reveal the story.
Meadows, 61, was in the White House residence on election night huddled with Donald Trump, Ivanka, Jared Kushner and Donald Trump Jur, according to Olivia Nuzzi of New York Magazine.
Meadows last appeared in public, with Trump, early Wednesday morning, unmasked.
White House officials are now alarmed, given that Meadows has been around other staff members while potentially contagious, according to reports, an aide told CNN.
It’s unclear when the chief of staff, Trump’s fourth in four years, tested positive for the deadly virus.
On Friday 129,000 people in the United States tested positive for the virus. It was the third day in a row for a record number of new infections in the country.
More than three dozen people associated with the president or the White House have been infected by the virus, including the president, his wife, Melania, and their youngest son, Barron.
Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff Marc Short and other aides tested positive for the virus late last month, shortly before the election.
Meadows was at Trump’s bedside when the president was hospitalized last month with Covid-19.
Most Americans misrated Trump’s handling of the pandemic in public opinion polls.
On October 25, Meadows admitted that the United States government is no longer trying to control the pandemic.
Mark Meadows, speaking on CNN, said: “We are not going to control the pandemic. We are going to control the fact that we receive vaccines, therapies.”
When pressed by CNN host Jake Tapper on why not, Meadows responded, “Because it’s a contagious virus like the flu.”
And Trump has repeatedly said that Covid would disappear after the election.
