President Donald Trump has threatened to fire Dr. Anthony Fauci, America’s leading infectious disease expert, during a midnight rally in Florida 24 hours before the presidential election.
As the crowd at the Miami Opa-Locka airport chanted “Fire Fauci,” Trump allowed the chants to continue for several seconds before replying, “Don’t tell anyone, but let me wait until a little after the election.” I appreciate the advice. I appreciate.”

Fauci, one of the world’s leading infectious disease experts, has served for more than three decades as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). He is a leading expert on Trump’s coronavirus task force and has often offered frank guidance on public health in contrast to the president’s repeated falsehoods about the severity of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Trump’s rally in Florida, a critical watershed he needs to win the election, took place as Covid-19 cases in the state continued to rise. As in countless rallies of the Trump campaign, there was no social distancing and thousands of attendees did not wear face masks.
Miami-Dade County, where the event took place, has a midnight curfew to mitigate the spread of the virus. The county ordinance states that the curfew is “necessary to safeguard life and health, as late-night parties and gatherings have the potential to spread Covid-19.” Trump’s speech continued until after midnight and attendees were still leaving the venue after 1 a.m.
The rally was Trump’s fifth event of the day, in a tight schedule that saw him visit five separate states as the election reaches its final day of campaigning. Polls showed Trump falling behind in Florida by an average of 2.2%, heralding a close race.
