Donald Trump declares ‘I won’: the presidential tweet that threatens chaos

Almost two weeks after the elections, just before midnight here, the president tweeted again. In some ways it was the most absurd and outrageous tweet of his presidency. And that, of course, is saying something. That is because Donald trump now he definitively claims that he has won the elections. It is not that you have been the victim of fraud, it is not that you are contesting the result.

No, this was a simple statement that he won reelection. If this were happening in another country, the United States would be expected to impose sanctions or deliver severe diplomatic warnings.

Twitter, of course, had to place a warning against him, simply stating that “official sources called this differently”, and linking to an article making it clear that Joe Biden won the election. This follows a tumultuous weekend in Washington in which tens of thousands of Trump supporters filled the streets. A few hundred activists, mostly far-right conspiracy theorists linked to InfoWars and the Proud boys – caused problems throughout the weekend, paralyzing much of the area around the White House.I saw it and heard it for myself. Trump supporters yelling, “no to Trump, no to peace!”

Robert Moore reports from Washington as tens of thousands of Trump supporters hold rallies to back up his unsubstantiated claims that he won the election.

How does this end?The president doesn’t seem to be in the mood to budge. To say that you really won an election that you clearly lost is entering a world where truth has no value. On Sunday, Barack Obama called this “decay of truth.”In reality, it is “destruction of the truth.”

The entire building on which the country’s democratic system works is in danger. If a transition is never facilitated, if defeat is never acknowledged, if journalism is attacked, if the rules of the system are simply reversed, then America is not America. Now there must be the possibility that Donald Trump may need to be physically evicted from the Oval Office and escorted off the White House grounds. This is the crazy world we are in now. That absurd scenario is now being talked about openly 66 days before the Inauguration.
