CThe Secretary of Communities, Robert Jenrick, said that the ministers are “currently considering what steps we should take”, as he warned of a “rapid and serious situation” in the North.

The Westminster government comes under increasing pressure to act after Scotland announced new restrictions on the hospitality sector.

Dr Adam Kucharski, a scientist who advises the government, warned that there are “quite serious” outbreaks in some parts of England and doctors have warned of the increase in hospital admissions.

Jenrick was pressed on whether new restrictions on the hotel industry could come as early as Monday, as rates skyrocketed in cities like Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle.

“It is correct to say that the number of cases in the North West and North East and various cities, particularly in the Midlands like Nottingham, are increasing rapidly and that is a serious situation,” he told BBC Breakfast.

“We are currently considering what steps we should take, obviously on the advice of our scientific and medical advisers, and a decision will be made shortly.”
