Dele Alli was excluded from Tottenham’s Premier League team of the day for the second week in a row amid continued speculation about transfers.

The English midfielder was absent at home to Newcastle on Sunday, despite new signing Gareth Bale being in no condition to participate.

When asked on Sunday if Alli was not selected due to team rotation or other reasons, Tottenham manager José Mourinho said: “A little bit of both.”

“We started with [Harry] Kane, with [Heung-Min] Son, with lucas [Moura], then in the bank we have [Erik] Lick it and [Steven] Bergwijn, and when the players are on the field they have to try to gain more minutes for the next game, and for the next they have to fight for that. “

The 24-year-old was left out of the Tottenham team that dispatched Southampton 5-2 at St Mary’s Stadium last weekend for football reasons, according to Mourinho.

Alli was substituted at half-time during Tottenham’s opening 1-0 Premier League loss to Everton and also missed a 2-1 victory over Lokomotiv Plovdiv on 17 September.

The playmaker was involved for an hour in their away clash with FK Shkendija in the middle of the week, when Spurs secured their place in the Europa League play-offs.

Mourinho was asked about his future before Tottenham’s clash with Newcastle and said he was “convinced” that the midfielder would be a Tottenham player by the end of the transfer period.

He said Sky Sports News: “I think [he will stay]. I can even say that I am convinced that it will be. “

Sky Sports News has reported that Tottenham is not prepared to allow Alli to leave with a permanent deal, and club sources are adamant that he will stay and fight for his place.

Meanwhile, Tottenham and Inter Milan have held talks on the transfer of central defender Milan Skriniar, who could still join before the transfer deadline on October 5.

Gareth Bale, Sergio Reguilon, Matt Doherty, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart have come to the club so far in this window.
