The bodies of five children were found in a private apartment in the western German city of Solingen, police said.
They gave few initial details about the discovery, with no information on the cause of death.
Emergency services were called to the residential block in the Hasseldelle area of the city on Thursday.
The police are reportedly treating the incident as a criminal act and are expected to provide more details later.
According to unconfirmed reports published on the German news website Bild, the five children were between one and eight years old. A sixth child, apparently 11 years old, was said to have survived.
Few details have been released about the children’s parents, although there are unconfirmed reports that the 27-year-old mother survived a suicide attempt at a train station in Düsseldorf.
A local police spokesman told Bild: “We still cannot say anything about the motive. The mother must be interviewed.”
