David McGoldrick has been banned from Republic of Ireland UEFA Nations League matches with Wales and Finland due to an injury to the kidnapper.
The Sheffield United striker led the line superbly in Ireland’s loss to Slovakia in the Euro 2020 playoff semi-final.
McGoldrick retired towards the end of the first period of extra time in Bratislava, having created a number of scoring opportunities.
He could only watch as Ireland lost 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw, missing a final showdown with Northern Ireland and a chance to play in a third consecutive European Championship, where Dublin will be one of the host cities.
McGoldrick’s absence from the UEFA Nations League double is yet another blow for Stephen Kenny’s shy side, who have scored once in his three games in charge.
Kenny will also make a late decision on Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy, who went down with his thigh on Thursday.
“James McCarthy is not that bad, but we will have to wait and see how he is in relation to the proximity of the game tomorrow, so he has doubts,” Kenny said.
“But he hasn’t had any tears or anything like that. The scan was fine, there’s good news from his scan.”
Kenny called Sean Maguire and Daryl Horgan on Friday in place of Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah, who were removed minutes before the start of the game against Slovakia after they were deemed to have been in close contact with a backroom staff member who had tested positive. for coronavirus.
A late appeal to allow both players to play was rejected and Kenny confirmed that Brighton winger Connolly would have started.
“There’s no question that it was hugely disappointing, hugely disappointing. We are very, very disappointed about that.
“Aaron was selected on the team and Adam would have been a good attacking option for us too, and finding out on the day, and then a little saga because there was the possibility of an appeal and so forth in the situation.
“It was not a good preparation on game day because we were discussing him and the impact he had rather than the game itself.
“But listen, there’s nothing we can do about it. The players were excellent on the night. There were no guarantees if we had both players.”
Ireland is third in their Nations League group after drawing with Bulgaria and losing to Finland in their first two matches.
