Cyberpunk 2077 is a disaster on PS4 and Xbox One

Cyberpunk 2077 launched at midnight last night, and now that the console versions are out, we’re getting our first proper glimpse of the game running on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. First impressions are sadly not good.

I’ve been playing the PS4 version of the epic sci-fi CD Projekt and can report poor performance, including low frame rates and a texture pop-up when the screen is busy. Even when it isn’t, there is sometimes low resolution blur in images. And I’ve come across several characters locked in a T pose, frozen in place or on an object. You can still talk to these NPCs, but their mouths don’t move.

Has the PS5 changed the way we play single-player games forever?

I had a chat with Tom Morgan from Digital Foundry, who provided me with some screenshots of Cyberpunk 2077 running on a base PS4 along with some analysis:

According to Morgan, Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 looks very blurry, at 720p and 900p resolution, and the frame rate for any driving through large areas of the city is consistently around 20. While some indoor battles work fine. at 30fps, they can drop to 25fps. . Frame rate drops are one thing, but there are also issues – major mishaps in action where a new object or texture needs to be loaded. This can make shooting or driving challenging.

Running the game on PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility improves things to some extent; Certainly loading is faster and frame rate unlocks at 60fps, but glitches, including T-posing NPCs, remain.

It turns out that Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 does not have the “quality mode” that is available on Xbox Series X. That is, the game on PS5 runs in “performance mode” by default. On Xbox Series X you can switch between the two. The quality mode shoots for high resolution, something approaching 4K and 30 frames per second, while the performance mode aims for a smooth experience. It’s worth noting that the Xbox Series S doesn’t have this switch between modes either.

Scientific analysis from Digital Foundry is, of course, incoming, but what is clear at this early stage is that there is a significant gap between the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 and the console versions.

And even just hours after launch, the Cyberpunk 2077 console memes have started.

Clearly, CD Projekt has a lot of work to do to bring the console version of Cyberpunk 2077 up to speed. In a tweet, the developer said: “The journey has just begun and we are working hard on the next game fixes and updates.”

Meanwhile, playing Cyberpunk 2077 on PC with a robust platform feels like the best option, for now.
